MAWIZA _ÜL
Mawiza is a relatively fresh Chilean formation whose debut album was released on July 18 via Season of Mist. The record is performed entirely in the Mapudungun language. The word Ül means “Song” in this language. Originally, the band was formed under the name Nunca Seremos Dichosos , and only about five years ago did they change their name to Mawiza. The members do not use the Mapudungun language to make the vocals sound more exotic or unusual, but because they themselves have Mapuche roots. The Mapuche are one of the most significant Indigenous peoples of South America. The word Mapuche means “people of the land,” while Mapudungun means “the language of the land.” Their musical culture is rich and distinctive, filled with unique folk traditions, and this is a deep source of inspiration for Mawiza as well.
